“pretend” is a false friend, Italian students will likely translate it with pretendere a word that actually means “ to demand, to claim or to expect”.  But as words can have multiple meanings, sometimes only one of the meanings corresponds and the others don’t.

The meaning of “to pretend” is “to make believe” and it can be used either as an adjective or as a verb.

As an adjective it means fake, artificial; for example:  She had a pretend conversation on the phone today.

As a verb it means to make believe, to imagine; for example: I’ll pretend to be a king.

    The Car in the Garage

When I was nine or ten years old, living in Brooklyn, my mom rented out our garage to a local gentleman who kept his antique early 1950s era car safe and sound in there.  Well, not entirely. Several times I snuck into the garage and got into the unlocked car and pretended to drive it. With the garage door closed, I made vroom-vroom sounds and pretended to careen down the road, turning left and right, going up and down hills. Nobody ever found out how often I took that car out of the garage and drove it around the country, at least in my own mind.

Making believe I was driving that car is one of the best memories I have of my childhood.
